Irregular Migration from West Africa to Europe: Knowns and Unknown

Nova School of Business and Economics, Universität Lissabon

HWWI | Mönkedamm 9 | 20457 Hamburg | 10:00 - 18:00 o'clock

On October 9 and 10, 2025, researchers from the fields of economics and political science met at HWWI to discuss the causes and effects of (irregular) migration between Africa and Europe. The aim of the international workshop was to present current research projects in an interdisciplinary framework. The keynote speech was given by Professor Catia Batista, Ph.D., one of the leading researchers in the field of irregular migration, from the Nova School of Business and Economics. Ms. Stanislava Topouzova, Ph.D., also provided the researchers with valuable insights into the work of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in North Africa. The workshop was organized by Dr. Sebastian Leue in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Sarah Langlotz (University of Göttingen) and Paul Michel (University of Cologne).

We would like to thank the German Research Foundation (grant number 569852874), the Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation (grant number 2411-55), the Volkswagen Foundation as part of the Momentum project “Tapping innovative data sources to analyze the impact of authoritarian states on global development,” as well as Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg and Georg August University Göttingen for their financial support.
