Energy & Commodities

Research on energy and commodities analyzes the availability, use and price development as well as their impact on the economy and industry. It examines both fossil and renewable energies, the transformation towards a sustainable energy supply as well as market structures and regulatory framework conditions.

The supply of energy and commodities is a fundamental prerequisite for economic growth and social development. Commodities are raw materials such as crude oil, copper, or wheat, which are traded globally. Our research focuses on energy and industrial organization, analysing the dynamics of global commodity and energy markets.

A central tool in our research is the HWWI Commodity Price Index, one of the longest-established indicators of commodity price developments. Since its establishment in the 1950s, the index has tracked price movements of the most important commodity imports for highly developed economies. It is available in multiple versions: a historical time series for long-term analysis, a real-time dataset to reconstruct past information environments, and a daily updated version for precise market assessments. The index is calculated for all OECD and Eurozone country groups as well as for each individual country.

Additionally, we analyse developments in energy markets, particularly the expansion of renewable energy, the use of hydrogen, and the transition to a more climate-friendly energy supply. We also examine industrial organization aspects such as market structures, competition, and regulatory influences. Our goal is to provide sound empirical analyses that offer a deeper understanding of developments in the commodity and energy sectors.
