Professional Career

Michael Berlemann has been scientific director of the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI) since March 2022.

He studied economics at Ruhr University Bochum from 1989 to 1994 and received his doctorate in 1999 with a thesis on political economic theories of inflation and the economy at the Faculty of Economics at the Technical University of Dresden. He successfully completed his habilitation in economics in 2004 with a thesis on the methods of inflation forecasting at the same university.

Since July 2007 he has been a professor of economics, especially political economy and empirical economic research, at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg. Before his appointment to Hamburg, Michael Berlemann was Managing Director of the Dresden branch of the ifo Institute for Economic Research.

In addition, Michael Berlemann has been a research professor at the ifo Institute for Economic Research since 2010. He is member of the committees of Economic Policy and Economic Systems of Verein für Socialpolitik. Since 2013 he has been editor in chief of the “Review of Economics”. Since 2019 he has also been a member of the Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society” (CLICCS) at the University of Hamburg.
