The frequency of natural disasters has increased significantly in recent decades. Against this background, the question of what economic consequences are associated with the occurrence of natural disasters is becoming increasingly important. Both arguments for positive and negative growth effects are discussed in the literature. This article uses econometric time series models to examine the extent to which the flood disaster of August 2002 had a short-term impact on economic growth in Saxony. According to the results, the positive growth effects predominated. Without the flood disaster, the growth of Saxony’s gross domestic product in 2002, 2003 and 2004 would probably have been 0.6, 1.8 and 0.5 percentage points lower, respectively.
