The flood disaster 20 years ago caused massive damage in numerous communities in Saxony. One of the lessons from the shock back then was that more resilience is needed. However, our study of population data shows that those communities that were affected by the flood had an annual population development that was about a quarter of a percentage point better than communities that were not affected. Improved flood protection, but possibly also flood aid, make particularly vulnerable regions still appear attractive as places to live.
