Hamburg Airport - Assessing Its Regional Economic Role
HWWI Studies, No. 4, Hamburg Institute of International Economics.
The aim of this study is to systematically assess the regional economic significance of Hamburg Airport. The focus lies on its economic interconnections within the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. The analysis shows that each euro generated at the airport is associated with up to €2.3 in regional value added. Similarly, each job at the airport supports at least two additional jobs in the surrounding region. These strong multiplier effects highlight the close sectoral integration of the airport with various industries – from logistics and services to tourism. Thus, Hamburg Airport functions not only as a transport hub, but also as a key economic driver for the metropolitan region. The study provides important insights into the airport’s broader economic role beyond air traffic and serves as a solid foundation for informed economic and structural policy decisions at the regional level.
